How to Choose Between Ductile Iron and Stainless Steel Valves for Water Pipeline Projects

2026-09-24

Material selection is one of the most critical decisions during water system valve procurement, directly influencing pipeline safety, maintenance cycle and project budget. Ductile iron valves are recommended for general clean water, fire protection, HVAC circulating water and conventional sewage pipelines. With excellent pressure resistance and affordable price, they are ideal for large-scale municipal and building water projects. Stainless steel valves are reserved for high-purity potable water, weak corrosive wastewater, coastal salty water and hygienic process piping. Engineers should evaluate three core factors: water medium property, installation environment and project budget. For underground buried neutral water pipelines, epoxy coated ductile iron is economical. For high purity or chloride-containing water, stainless steel 304 or 316 will be the safer option.
